With Gorleston's pitch being redeveloped, Harwich travelled to the Greens' temporary home at The Nest in Norwich, an artificial surface.
Harwich started well, forcing a serries of corner kicks. From one of these, Reece Harte sent over a well-placed ball that Joe Knight headed forward for Luke Mayhew - making his 100th appearance for the Shrimpers - to shoot just over the crossbar. Next, Luke Spurling's through pass found Knight whose shot was well saved by home goalkeeper Travis Canham.
Harwich took the lead in the 15th minute when full-back Keelan Milburn crossed perfectly for Knight (pictured) to stoop and dive low to head in a well-taken goal.
Gorleston came back well from this setback with a well-worked 3-man move that finished with a shot going just wide.
With 25 minutes gone, a late tackle saw Harwich concede a penalty kick which produced Gorleston's first equaliser, Jerry Dasaolu netting from the spot.
Just before half time Harwich engineered a chance with Louie Bloom volleying inches wide from Mayhew's pass.
There was a lively opening to the second half with Mayhew having a good shot well saved by Canham and Gorleston firing over when well placed.
In the 55th minute, Shrimpers goalkeeper Brad Cook pulled off a great stop when he dived full length to turn a shot around the post at the expense of a corner.
Five minutes later, Harwich counted themselves most unlucky not to regain their lead when Mayhew's cross was headed into the net by Knight but the assistant referee gave a contentious offside decision.
Gorleston are just outside the play-off positions and have mastered their all-weather pitch and Shrimpers central defender Dan Keeble made an excellent last-ditch tackle to thwart them.
Midway through the half, Harwich were back in front when Alfie Eldridge and Mayhew combined neatly to set up Knight, who reacted with quick feet to poke the ball past Canham for a marksman's goal.
Three minutes later, Gorleston were reduced to 10 men with Declan Allan receiving a straight red card for a tackle on Knight.
With 5 minutes remaining, Harwich had a golden chance to make it 3-1 in their favour when Gareth Heath and Knight worked an opportunity for Mayhew, normally an ace finisher, but he put the ball wide.
Harwich were made to pay in the final minute of normal time when a long ball over the defence found Brodie Adams and he prodded the ball past the advancing Cook for Gorleston's late equaliser.
In injury time, Harwich pressed and Gorleston were further reduced by a sin-bin sentence but the 9 men held out and were jubilant at the final whistle.
Harwich have now gone 8 matches unbeaten with 4 wins and 4 draws to sit in 4th position with games in hand but things look so tight for home advantage in the play-off places.
