Report by Terry Francis and Colin Rogers
With their first-team match postponed and their second string needing points to steer clear of relegation, Needham Market drafted in 5 of their National League North squad. The frost and fog had left this one of the few matches still on in the area and so at Needham's all-weather pitch a good crowd of 145 were in attendance.
Harwich's first attack came in the 5th minute when Alfie Canning forced a good stop from goalkeeper Marcus Garnham, one of those Step 2 players.
Needham were making it difficult for Harwich to get the ball and making dangerous breaks, from one of which Jacob Lay celebrated scoring but the assistant referee had his flag raised.
With 20 minutes gone, Harwich came close when Louie Bloom fired over a dangerous cross but, at the far post, Luke Spurling was just unable to apply the finishing touch.
However, 16 minutes later the Shrimpers took the lead when Greg Rodger broke through, lifting the ball to the left side and this time Spurling (pictured, courtesy of Ben Pooley) was able to control the ball and beat Garnham with a smart finish.
An entertaining game continued to be end-to-end with Lay breaking through the Harwich defence but dwelling too long on the ball and the Shrimpers were able to go in at half time holding their 1-0 lead.
Harwich scored their second goal in the 60th minute when Spurling chipped his well-executed shot past Garnham.
The fog had been gradually thickening, making it difficult to follow play from the touchline and one of the assistants called the referee over. However, after a consultation between the three match officials, with adjustments their positioning, play continued.
Rodger had a long-range effort well saved by Garnham, whilst at the other end Shrimpers goalkeeper Brad Cook was going the wrong way but pivoted to pull off a wonderful diving stop to thwart Needham.
With both teams having made their substitutions and the match entering its closing stages, it seemed that Harwich would hold on to their two-goal lead for a notable victory.
With 10 minutes remaining the Shrimpers then lost possession in their own half on two occasions and the Marketmen were quick to pounce and take full advantage with goals from Seth Chambers and substitute Evan Gledhill to make the scores level at full time.
Harwich team: Brad Cook, Alfie Smith, Jack Wood, Dan Keeble, Reece Harte, Alfie Eldridge, Brad James, Alfie Canning, Greg Rodger, Luke Spurling and Louie Bloom. Substitutes: Joe Knight, Gareth Heath, Liam White, Tyler Sullivan and Keelan Milburn (all used).
