HARWICH MAKE IT 8 WINS IN 9 MATCHES WITH VICTORY IN FEISTY MEETING WITH FC PETERBOROUGH

Terry Francis7 Sep 2024 - 21:17

THE SHRIMPERS CONTINUED THEIR EXHILARATING START TO THE SEASON AND RETAIN THEIR POSITION AS EARLY LEAGUE LEADERS THANKS TO A 3-1 WIN ON SATURDAY.

REPORT BY DANIEL ROGERS

Harwich took the lead after only two minutes when Ewan Livingston won a corner kick which Danny Garrad crossed for new signing Bradley James, making his first start, to net with a bullet header.
Harwich dominated the early stages of the game, but in the 15th minute FC Peterborough had a chance which luckily for the Shrimpers ended up stumbling into goalkeeper Brad Cook's hands.
A couple of minutes later, the hosts had their best chance so far when the ball was crossed and the resultant shot skimmed the crossbar.
With 22 minutes gone Peterborough were back on terms when a shot from the edge of the penalty area ended up trickling over the Shrimpers goal-line.
Harwich youngster Livingston, another making his first start for the first XI, was unlucky not to score when his shot from the edge of the box hit the post.

It was nip and tuck and a Peterborough shot from a good position went just over the crossbar.
With half time approaching, James was brought down and after a long consultation between the referee and one of his assistants, Harwich were awarded a penalty. Joe Knight had remained cool during this delay and calmly converted the spot kick to restore the Shrimpers' lead.
With 8 minutes of added time played, Knight went within inches of scoring his second goal with an overhead kick.
Five minutes after the restart, Peterborough's goalkeeper Sarunas was perfectly positioned for midfielder Alfie Smith's shot to go straight into his hands.
In the 64th minute there was a dangerous moment for Harwich when Borough won a corner but from a header Cook made an excellent diving save low at the near post.
Midway through the half Harwich increased their lead to 3-1 when Knight played a lovely through ball to Garrad whose chip shot went in off the post.
Harwich manager Matt Carmichael had made a brave decision to start Livingston and leave 4 of his more experienced players on the bench. The youngster had a good 70 minutes and vindicated this choice and with Peterborough now pressing to get back into the game, the Shrimpers boss was able to make substitutions to bolster his team and see off the home team's challenge.
Harwich team: Brad Cook, Alfie Eldridge, Jack Wood, Dan Keeble, Reece Harte, Brad James, Alfie Smith (captain), Greg Rodger, Ewan Livingston, Danny Garrad and Joe Knight. Substitutes: Gareth Heath, Idreess Namisi, Alfie Canning and Liam White.
