Harwich manager Matt Carmichael shuffled the pack as he looked to decide his best line-up for the commencement of new Thurlow Nunn League season.
The Shrimpers came close when Joe Knight's shot from the edge of the penalty box was pushed onto the post by Thorpe's goalkeeper, Oscar Lawrence.
Next, striker Danny Garrad was well placed but blasted his shot over the crossbar.
Thorpe then came back, firing in a long shot that went close.
Lawrence was in great form for Athletic and in a one-on-one situation pulled off another good save when Luke Mayhew tried to take the ball around him.
The Shrimpers had another scoring opportunity before half time when Gareth Heath's free kick was headed inches over by Mitch Knight.
The second half started with Lawrence making a brilliant save from Liam White's shot and later Garrad fired a snap shot just wide.
Harwich took the lead when Reece Harte's ball over the top of the Thorpe defence set up Mayhew who drove his shot into the top corner of the net.
A minute later ex-Shrimper Luke Barnard equalised for Thorpe with a well-placed shot that went just inside the post, beating the diving Brad Cook.
Thorpe included six former Harwich players in their squad and another of these, Harvey Cowler, sent in a volley that forced Cook to make a good save.
Thorpe, who enjoyed a great time last season pulling off a treble that included lifting the Essex Junior Cup, acquitted themselves well in this match and we wish them success in the coming season, having been promoted to the Premier Division of the Essex and Suffolk Border League.
